Losing Your Party Oomph? Feel Better, Take Charge!

Varela at a family reunionIf you're a "party geek" like me, you're rarely-to-never burnt out about party planning.

But, for those of you who have to plan the doggone family reunion (or insert any other type of party), yet again - you know the one that feels more like an obligation than a fun experience - well, Cater-Hater is here to let you know that you can get through it.

The World of Self-Help Trends

We've all heard that the latest trend is to hire a life coach, haven't we? Well, you might think that's a lame idea.

You could spend some time combing through book titles in the "Self Help Section" at your local Borders or Barnes & Noble bookstore; trying to find self help books, specifically for people in food catering services or the event planning/party planning industry, maybe.

But, you know what?

Catering and event planning/party planning self help books, specifically written for people in the party industry, don't exist.

But, not to worry. Because I've done some research and have some good news for you.

You really can be calmer and take charge when dealing with your family members, friends and co-workers, and clients and employees - if you're a party industry professional.

You don't have to sweat it. You just need to understand the true root of what stresses you out and separate the problems that you can solve from the ones that are unsolvable.

Late for work or late getting started on a party project

Who's late? Not you, right? Or, maybe it is you that's late.

You hit that snooze button umpteen times. And now, you're scurrying, brushing your teeth, making coffee, and trying to get dressed, all at the same time. Or yikes, you're 30 minutes late for your meeting at Classic Party Rentals!

Personally, I believe that when you're late a lot, more often than not you're sick and tired of feeling like you're doing every darned thing yourself. Or, you're just sick of your job duties or sick of your job in general. If that's the case, think about putting your feelers out there. Ask around. Find out about other companies that may be hiring.

Irregardless of who's late or what's late, research shows that it's not being late getting to the catering or event planning office, or being late for appointments with vendors, or worrying about of getting behind, or being behind on your party planning that's your main problem. It's your negative response to it.

When you acknowledge your fear of getting (or being, once again) in trouble with your boss or with your cousin (who is the family reunion project manager), the mindful thing to do is to breathe deep and not allow your feelings overtake you. Remember, you decide how you want to feel about things.

Because if you continue to worry, instead of stopping to take a few breaths from the depths of your diaphragm (yes, this really does work), you won't trigger your nervous system (your parasympathetic nervous system, actually), and arrive at a place of self-peace.

You might think this is weird.
But, staying completely still for a few minutes can help too.

How can I stay still when I'm late, you nutcase? I'm late. And, I agreed to see a special client promptly at ten o'clock!

Try it. It will calm you right down. If you do it, afterward - you should be able to focus better. And, get your next steps of order together.

It's the money honey

I know, I know. Everything is due at once.

Whether it's personal or professional, you're probably trying to figure out how to stop a potential party client from taking their business elsewhere but make a profit, or how to have your deposit money ready for your family reunion party rentals.

But here's the thing,
worrying can help you get ahead of what's coming up next.

What? Yes, it really can.

For instance, because you're worrying, try this. Decide to think of ways to get ahead of any potential problems that could arise.

Well, what if I scare of the client off because our proposed party bid is too high? Or, what if the rental company won't offer us a discounted price on the chafing dishes, linens, and chairs and tables that we need?

Schedule an advance meeting with the manager of the catering business you work for. Ask for some face time, so that the two of you can brainstorm strategies that can help everybody. Or, ask your crazy cousin to negotiate with the sales person at the rental company.

Let's face it, letting your mind wander into problems that don't exist is fruitless.

That only makes you avoid dealing with what's on your plate today. Why not look at any real problems that you're faced with today?

That way, you can begin to get rid of some of what's on your plate. Facing the fear of your problems means, you can come up with a viable solution that suits everyone, both the catering company and the client; you can think to call the rental company manager to discuss payment options for your upcoming family reunion.

You can't change anything without coming up with a solution, right? But, you can make plans that will help you progress toward your future goals.

I loved family reunion, party and special event planning

I know about this. I've "been there" a couple of times, myself.

Sometimes you can feel like you're "in it" alone. Think of it this way, there's something good that can come out of doing the job alone.

But when it comes to a personal party planning project, like planning a family reunion, sometimes you can't protect yourself from all the possible hurt and rejection that could come your way. That is, unless you walk away from it. Or, them.

And, you really can't replace your fear with self-confidence that you don't have.

But, you can look at what you want.
And figure out how to make it happen.

Just know that, this too shall pass. Just as the sun comes up and sets everyday, things always change. And you know what? Most of the time things look better and brighter the next day.

You can get through it. You can make it.
Because I promise. Things will get better.

Just keep the faith. Keep your chin up.

And, never let them see you sweat!

Amazon's Catering Book Bestsellers

11-03-10 I'll Just Read A Book InsteadThis is the latest list of "should-reads" from the Amazon.com catering book bestseller list.

Most of these are catering and culinary books that you probably should read, or haven’t read but want to.

And, maybe some of these books are of the "I haven’t read and I don’t want to read" type.

A few of these catering books made the Cater-Hater "Catering Book Favorites" section. Check it out. It's the blinking box showing you books on the left-hand side of the Cater-Hater blog. Just click on any of the books that interest you to see the www.Amazon.com prices and to place an order.

Several of these Amazon catering bestseller books are books that I love and actually have in my personal catering book library. And, of course others are books I still want to read. And, maybe even reread.

7. The Truth about Forever (Teen's Top 10 (Awards)) by Sarah Dessen (May 11, 2004) - Now I'm sure about this book why this book appears on their list. It appears to me that it doesn't have anything to do with "Catering". But, it made the Amazon Catering Book Bestsellers list, so I've added it. Go figure, right?

10. The Fundamental Techniques of Classic Cuisine by The French Culinary Institute, Judith Choate, Glenn Wolf and Matthew Septimus (Aug 1, 2007)

11. Restaurant Marketing for Owners and Managers (Wiley Restaurant Basics Series) by Patti J. Shock, John T. Bowen and John M. Stefanelli (Oct 17, 2003)

Are there any more catering books that you’ve found that you like? Please share them in the comments section below.

And, if you want to re-post this list to your site, by all means, help yourself. It'd be great if you'd link back to Amazon's Catering Book Bestsellers. Happy reading to you!

Make Minimal Party Effort: Get Maximum Party Effect

Searching for ways to make minimal party effort to get maximum party effect that's new or improved?

Consider a party make-under, with the fresh take on minimalism that is seizing the World of Parties.

Think pared-down decor, unadorned floral arrangements of simplicity, and perfect-for-your-budget culinary and beverage choices, like upscale carny food. Isn't that an oxymoron?

Cutting back, by stripping away all of the fuss of party decor glitz and super glamor, is likely your true ticket to your party's transformation that (because of the tanked economy) many of your guests will be able to appreciate.

Get your guests to show up.

With an eye toward exorbitant gas price demands these days, show that you're the smartest party host they know; pare things down. As much as you love everyone, invite people who won't have to go out of their way to get to your party.

Make your party crisp (the devil is in the details, remember?) and clean. Don't run out of anything. And yes, use plenty of color if you want to.

Because less, done right, can be so much more.

The Pomp and Circumstance of Parties: Free At Last

cap throwHave you ever been sidelined from producing parties? I have.

I am currently somewhat sidelined, some would say.

Two years ago, I hatched a plan to head South after starting Carlo At Your Service Productions in 2005.

I thought it would be a good idea to open another business my business in Houston, Texas. And, if you've been reading Cater-Hater, you know that I came here and I'm doing it.

Still, bending my universe to my own will, I've gone from producing parties to producing articles about parties - sharing culinary tips and decor concepts to keep you not only geeked-up about parties, but to help you, too. So naturally, I also writing about what you're forced to spend on parties and ways to get around it is important to me.

Let's face it, professionally produced parties typically cost too much.

Anyway, I had big plans to make money hand-over-fist. And, I did pretty darn well. But alas, as things progressed on, things took on a new shape unlike anything I'd ever imagined. I realized that writing was a highly probable thing for me to do. Hence, Cater-Hater, just for starters.

So, after being told by three people to write, while others that I know in the party industry are breaking their necks to make money to stay afloat, chasing new clients for bookings, I do anything but mope about the parties I'm not doing.

I write to advocate that you save money by learning to do as much as you can yourself.

What a wonderful difference writing about parties, catering, event planning (party planning), and weddings makes. Sharing my take in the latest party decor trends, minus doing all that I can to convince clients to try them, makes coming up with information to share with you pretty easy. Here's why.

Sometimes, some of the parties that you folks attend - you know look like they belong on a reality show, where contestants try their darnedest to look professional.

Thankfully, slowly but surely, more and more, as I take on Cater-Hater new themes surface, new party decor silhouettes come to mind, and new ideas reveal themselves. Then, I share them with you. And, try to show you how to save money doing them yourself.

In truth, my opinion is that there's an edginess to serving up delicious cuisine, beverages, and decor styles that actually requires little hand-holding. But, for me makes writing about them (as opposed to producing them) super appealing in the long run.

Case in point: some of the best party style ideas presented anywhere (that feature guest-quality approached with ease, no certain party style uniformity - for example, safari looks with wild abstract printed linens, host/caterer and host/event planner transparency, and of course, beautiful floras) hold their own with similar themes just about everywhere.

Another example: telling you that fewer guests at longer parties are the latest vogue.

That's because of a down-turned economy, of course. Today, the smartest party hosts play by no rules anyway, and relish the freedom of it. Even if things get bourgeois, you can always find ways at Cater-Hater to host a party with an inexpensive sophistication that borders on cheap without looking chintzy.

And while I'm thinking about it, let me add that while the always popular white party happens, it's counterparts - graffiti prints and wild stripes, and anything else colorful that you can think of, offer a happy spirit that relegates the importance of doing "your party thang" your own way. So, why not try it?

The most important catering and decor party style message is similar to the Burger King marketing phrase, "Have it your way".

Use your spirited intelligence along with money saving elements to shape a fun party experience. Do anything different than that, and you will have invited a great group of people to a boring, traditional party that causes them to say, "I should have stayed home".

Don't be shy about cutting back where you have to. Those parties, the kind made of square-to-be-hip-nerdy-cheapness, once looked down upon, are today's keepsake ideas that you and can make magnificent, and pull together to wow everyone.

The pomp and circumstance of parties: free at last.

That's how I'm feeling these days; free.

Boy, am I ever glad I'm a party writer.

Now, go throw a party, y'all! Or, write about it.
Then come back and tell everybody that comes here about it. Thanks.

A Quick Lesson: How To Have A Modern-Decor Party Style for All Occasions

Row of palm trees and a full moonBecome the most buzzed about party darling in your circle of friends by styling a new type of party decor minimalism: long rows of practical potted flowers with a, seemingly, mile of tall palm plants placed to resemble a California boulevard.

Next, add high-back comfortable seating for your party guests and you've invoked those who typically say, "Sorry, I can't stay long", to head to the nearby bar, cop a cocktail, and plant themselves firmly to stay for the duration.

    Smokers count.

Include, instead of discount and exclude, your chain-smoking party guests by placing a "convertible" tent (tent walls with no roof or cover) a fair distance from your food buffet station(s).

    Be completely different.

Order and decorate small tents, connected together, for a fractured view of your party - placing your bar in one tent and your food in another tent and so on.

Creating intimacy with smaller tents inner-connected requires everyone to be curious and actually move from "room" to "room", as opposed to sitting in one place all night. Oh, and if you're planning to have a dance area, make your dance floor the center focus of your event.

    Love, love, love parties.

Growing up in a small suburb of Detroit; in Rochester, Michigan, parties weren't particularly stylish, per say. So, at the time a career in the party world was the furthest thing from my mind.

After graduating from Rochester High School, I began to act on the way I wished parties would be. After several "fits and starts" at career choices I really wasn't very interested in, parties became my most fun way to bring eclectic groups of people together, while creating various, exciting party realities.

Fortunately, I've had the opportunity to grow gracefully into new party-decor styles as a professional caterer and event planner with a focus on luxury service and services, helping people, bringing together entirely different crowds of people every time.

Are you a party maven too? If you are, how did you get started? And, what are you doing today?

    Party Decor Trends 2011

safari partyAriba! Here's an idea. When it comes to party themes, party decor trends 2011 dictate that one way you could go is: Mexican Riviera-style.

Take your party decor concept on a vacation, style-wise, with spirited, bright prints, embroidered linen trimming and accents. And, now you're fiesta ready.

Or, spoil your guests with a minimalistic look, incorporating color blocking that's simple but not bland. Go with primary colors of bold yellow, green, and a vibrant and bright tangerine orange. Or, switch gears and strike a definitive cord with a deep navy, highlighted with emerald green and a vibrant yellow.

Go on location. Add a twist on safari-style and embrace a variety of texture. Showcase tassels and fringe along with animal print linens. Brown with gold tone trimmings rule! Strategically place garden decor items that coincide with your safari look and you'll likely save yourself some money.

Speaking of texture again, woven fabrics, wood and glitzy glitter signals the latest take on oh-so-very subtle luxury. Get a jungle vibe going with a floor and decor idea and place some good looking Astro-turf down on cemented areas to complete the look.

    Get wild.

Use your imagination. And, when you start to shop for party supplies, set your party decor trend 2011 style on high alert.

Got something creative to add? Drop Cater-Hater a line. We love it when you share your latest decor styles. Thanks and have fun at your party!

Party Coast Guard: West Coast vs Midwest

The rolled out red carpet at the entrance to U... Tell me, are you party L.A. cool or Midwest (or Detroit per say, maybe) gritty?

I've traveled the almost 3000 miles from L.A. to the Midwest, Detroit specifically, several times and have been fortunate enough to see the party style on both coasts. And, let's just say that, yes - high-end, big budget parties, on both coasts, are pretty much the same. But, for the most part, L.A. sophisticates spend more money, more often, on their private parties, weddings, and corporate special events. The delicious cuisine, the gorgeous decor... Wow! Not to fail to mention, the swag. I tell you, some L.A. people go all out.

I'm equally fascinated by party-life in both cities. Detroit (or one of its suburbs, Auburn Hills, Michigan, actually) was home permanently until I moved to Houston to raise up a new party cool business. What I dig about Metro-Detroit is it's roll-up-your-sleeves, blue collar, every man-type vibe.

L.A. certainly has it's pluses, however; wonderful weather and a bevy of beautiful people who really like to see-and-be-seen, and party.

However, you can easily be torn between the party styles of both cities. Although, in the Los Angeles area you often have party budgets in the millions. If you've been there or live there and were fortunate to attend a big budget movie premier party (have you?), you've likely seen Hollywood glitz on a scale of preponderance. There's never been a custom-decorated, tented party that they're almost never less impressed with, with their "seen one, seen them all" attitudes.

In Detroit, you usually have a more scaled back, Aunt Theresa and Cousin Josie catered and decorated soiree. Party color choices are often more staid; from smaller, private home parties to weddings. Party accessories are often balloons done simply. And, God forbid a party host get extravagant - bad or good, they certainly get talked about on both coasts.

But tell me your opinion, how do they stack up against each other? Here's where you can scroll down and tell us your take on the subject. Or, tell us what you think about party styles where you live compared to anywhere else in the world.

Cater-Hater bottom line: I love something about parties thrown on both coasts. What about you?

I'm Carlo. And this is my party truth.

I'm an off-premise catering evangelist/outlaw. I'm a passionista. I'm a paradox. I love when a client hires me to oversee their entire event, from start to finish - because I'm an event planner too.

I'm proud to be mom to Petey Wheatstraw, "the devil's son-in-law" - the best damn Chihuahua North of Mexico. I grew up in Rochester, Michigan. I currently live deep in the heart of Texas. And boy, do I ever miss Xochimilco Super Nachos, the fragrance of Fall and fresh cider and donuts at Paint Creek Cider Mill, and eating a Detroit Lafayette Coney Island when the mood hits me.

It's cool of you to stop by. And you know what's even better? Finding out what you have to say! Hit me up with a comment. Hang with me on Twitter . Or, connect with me using the FB gadget or G+ button on the sidebar. For real, I'd be really honored if you'd stop and give me a moment of your time - by clicking on either one. If you want to ask me anything or want to leave a comment, you know the drill; "Contact".

I like people. Especially, people who want the party truth. Talk to me.
