Some people seem to think that a party is just a party. For them it's, you get some food together and buy a few beverages, and voila!, you have a party. And don't even think about decor. But, you know better than that, because parties play a big part in people's identities.
Planning a party - for example, when you invite fewer guests, host a shorter soiree, or have a party with an odd or atypical theme - shows courage.
It takes a certain boldness to go against what other people might perceive as the "right" way to present a party. When you have a party that lasts 5 or 6 hours, you can easily seduce your guests by switching things up every 30 minutes or so; the food, the beverages, and the activities. Although if you decide to host a party with a shorter time line, you won't have time to incorporate ever changing ideas or gimmicks to hide behind.
Shorter parties, as the reaction to a poor economy, are beginning to lead the way in the party world, acting as a new style. You have to be decisive and strong to have a shorter party.
The trend of having shorter parties probably won't have any great effect on the mainstream party culture - not in this economy, anyway. Because in the party world today it's about the party's "personality". A shorter party, when done well, can be a reflection of a happy-go-lucky host with a fun attitude.
Shorter parties are likely to appeal more to a younger crowd.
A lot of the time when younger guests arrive, they arrive leaving; thinking about the next stop that they plan to make. Older guests are known to have more severe attitudes that are sometimes considered to be "old-fashioned". The older crowd tends to "park" themselves in one place, and stay there for the duration.
All the same: if you decide to cut your party short, you might as well make it short and sweet, and memorable. Why not plan something fierce and make a bold statement? If they're going to gossip about the shorter length of your party, you might as well knock them dead and truly giving them something to talk about.

I'm an off-premise catering evangelist/outlaw. I'm a passionista. I'm a paradox. I love when a client hires me to oversee their entire event, from start to finish - because I'm an event planner too.
I'm proud to be mom to Petey Wheatstraw, "the devil's son-in-law" - the best damn Chihuahua North of Mexico. I grew up in Rochester, Michigan. I currently live deep in the heart of Texas. And boy, do I ever miss Xochimilco Super Nachos, the fragrance of Fall and fresh cider and donuts at Paint Creek Cider Mill, and eating a Detroit Lafayette Coney Island when the mood hits me.
It's cool of you to stop by. And you know what's even better? Finding out what you have to say! Hit me up with a comment. Hang with me on Twitter (three accounts, you choose; @TheCaterHater, @CarloAtYourServ, or @CarloAtYourSer2). Or, connect with me using the FB gadget or G+ button on the sidebar. For real, I'd be honored if you'd click on either one.
If you want to ask me anything or want to leave a comment, you know the drill; "Contact".
I like people. Especially, people who want the party truth. Talk to me.
