Are You the Ultimate Party Host? (Why you should Care about the Rights and Responsibilities of your Guests)

Shiny happy people

Answer this for me. Do you believe that your party guests have rights when they attend your party?

Or, is it fair to say that because they've consented to be your guests they've clearly voiced their unspoken opinion regarding their rights, thereby giving up their rights to you, as their party host?

This is something that crossed my mind after reading today's Seth Godin post, Rights and responsibilities.

Godin said, "It seems, though, that organizations and individuals that focus more on their responsibilities and less on (their) rights tend to outperform." I agree.

As an expert caterer and event planner, I'm well aware that I'm responsible for what I do; how I take care of clients and their guests, and what I offer to my community. Entertaining people is a responsibility, not a right.

The dictionary definition of the word "entertaining" is:

en·ter·tain [èntər táyn]
(past and past participle en·ter·tained, present participle en·ter·tain·ing, 3rd person present singular en·ter·tains)
verb
1. vti amuse or interest audience: to engage a person or audience by providing amusing or interesting material
2. vti offer hospitality: to offer hospitality, especially by providing food and drink for guests at home
3. vt consider something: to turn something over in the mind, looking at it from various points of view
  • He would never entertain such an idea!
  • [15th century. <> entretenir "hold together, support" <> intertenere "hold between" <> tenere "hold"]

If your success as a party or special event host or hostess depends on, subconsciously or consciously, infringing your rights upon others, you've missed the whole point of hospitality and entertaining.

Bottom line: Responsibility can be a mother.

I'm Carlo. And this is my party truth.

I'm an off-premise catering evangelist/outlaw. I'm a passionista. I'm a paradox. I love when a client hires me to oversee their entire event, from start to finish - because I'm an event planner too.

I'm proud to be mom to Petey Wheatstraw, "the devil's son-in-law" - the best damn Chihuahua North of Mexico. I grew up in Rochester, Michigan. I currently live deep in the heart of Texas. And boy, do I ever miss Xochimilco Super Nachos, the fragrance of Fall and fresh cider and donuts at Paint Creek Cider Mill, and eating a Detroit Lafayette Coney Island when the mood hits me.

It's cool of you to stop by. And you know what's even better? Finding out what you have to say! Hit me up with a comment. Hang with me on Twitter (three accounts, you choose; @TheCaterHater, @CarloAtYourServ, or @CarloAtYourSer2). Or, connect with me using the FB gadget or G+ button on the sidebar. For real, I'd be honored if you'd click on either one. If you want to ask me anything or want to leave a comment, you know the drill; "Contact".

I like people. Especially, people who want the party truth. Talk to me.
