You've just hired someone to produce your special party. If your party production liaison (caterer, event planner/party planner) isn't self-absorbed and on their A-game they, they should just about know what you want before you do.
If they've "got you right", you've approved everything (or practically everything) they've got planned for you. All you have to do is write a check, show up at your party, and have a good time.
The good caterers and event planners mantra: What the client wants, the client gets.
When your party event planner can't find the perfect linen pattern for you, for example - he or she can simply custom design something, per your specifications, for you. And thanks to BBJ Linen, they'll make it for you.
A good party planner will be determined to see you have it your way.
Your food and decor should be an extension of your ideal design aesthetic - massive or reduced in size with rich or barren decor materials - basically, whatever works. What your party space should display is a sensibility that, ironically, will evoke a type of money-can't-buy look, yet be completely in step with your budget.
Everything should look very "you".
A good party or special event planner will take influences from your thoughts and ideas, and then from everywhere your ideas take them, they'll showcase what they've dreamed up for you. Dreaming or thinking of going with a European style - they would think of (and showcase) great craftsmanship; Asian influences should evoke the exotic.
Who's your audience? Who is the V.I.P. that you're celebrating? Is your event a charity dinner, an art gallery opening, or a child's birthday party in your backyard? If your caterer and event planner give you something predictable, everything is a cookie-cutter matchy-matchy, and your party will come across as boring, showing a lack of creativity.
And if that happens, quite frankly, you could have saved yourself the trouble of hiring someone and come up with something better than "boring" by yourself.
Your party should have a type of timeless feel about it that allows you and your guests to enjoy it's looks (decor) and tastes (food) that work just for you, that evolve from the beginning, going into the middle, and wrapping it up for a memorable ending.
Every client is a classic version of themselves. So remember, you're the perfect canvas.
The key to our job is to exhibit your classicism with an extravagance that shines throughout the details, irregardless of your color choices or food concept for your party, or it's theme. Your party or event planner shouldn't throw out your ideas. They shouldn't want to work without your taste buds, foremost, as well as your color shade and linen pattern ideas.
You don't need a new identity when it comes to your personal desires and tastes you'd like incorporated into your party. The main thing is, your planner should do their best to get you exactly what you've wanted.
Don't allow anyone to steal your identity by changing your vision for your party and your personal style. In other words, beware of "party identity thieves". I doubt that you'd allow someone to come in and change your corporate identity, would you?
There are ways to prevent identity theft... Get them to do what you want or go elsewhere.

I'm an off-premise catering evangelist/outlaw. I'm a passionista. I'm a paradox. I love when a client hires me to oversee their entire event, from start to finish - because I'm an event planner too.
I'm proud to be mom to Petey Wheatstraw, "the devil's son-in-law" - the best damn Chihuahua North of Mexico. I grew up in Rochester, Michigan. I currently live deep in the heart of Texas. And boy, do I ever miss Xochimilco Super Nachos, the fragrance of Fall and fresh cider and donuts at Paint Creek Cider Mill, and eating a Detroit Lafayette Coney Island when the mood hits me.
It's cool of you to stop by. And you know what's even better? Finding out what you have to say! Hit me up with a comment. Hang with me on Twitter (three accounts, you choose; @TheCaterHater, @CarloAtYourServ, or @CarloAtYourSer2). Or, connect with me using the FB gadget or G+ button on the sidebar. For real, I'd be honored if you'd click on either one.
If you want to ask me anything or want to leave a comment, you know the drill; "Contact".
I like people. Especially, people who want the party truth. Talk to me.
